Utilise online Wheel Offset Calculate to know wheel offset adjustments during wheel change for your vehicles. When you change a wheel with different width might give a better grip but consume more fuel, so check the wheel adjustments here. To use this calculator, give the width, and offset of the current wheel and new wheel and press the calculate button that provides wheel position change, and clearance change details.

What is Wheel Offset?

Wheel offset is the distance between the wheel centre line and the mounting surface. When the mounting surface is closer to the wheel face, then it is known to have a positive offset. If the mounting point is closer to the inside of the wheel, then it has a negative offset. When the mounting point is on the centerline, there is no offset.

Wheel backspacing is the distance between the mounting surface and the inside edge of the wheel.

Wheel Change in Clearance Formula | Position Change Formula

The width and offset of 2 wheels are used to find the change in clearance and position of the wheel.

Wheel clearance and position change formulas are here:

Clearance = (Wc - Wn)/2 + (Oc - On)

Position = (Wc - Wn)/2 - (Oc - On)

Where,

  • Wc is the width of the current wheel
  • Wn is the width of the new wheel
  • Oc is the offset of the current wheel
  • On is the offset of the new wheel

A positive offset indicates the wheel is more outward and away from suspension, and a negative offset means the wheel is closer to the suspension.

 How to Calculate Wheel Offset for Wheel Change?

Go through the detailed steps to use Wheel Offset Calculator.

  • Give the width and offset of the current wheel in the input field.
  • Enter the width and offset of the new wheel.
  • Hit the calculate button.
  • The calculator will give the change in clearance and position of the wheel.

FAQs on Wheel Offset Calculator

1. How much offset is 1.5 inches?

A 1.5-inch spacer is about 38 mm wheel offset is negative.

2. Is positive or negative offset better?

If your offset is too negative, then the outside of the tire will run on the body and fenders of the vehicle. If the offset is too positive, then the risk inside of the tire hitting your suspension.

3. How much wheel offset is acceptable?

If a wheel with enough clearance, the wrong offset can reduce the vehicle's stability. So the new offset should not be more than 5 millimetres from the old offset.

4. What are the types of offsets?

The different types of offsets are positive, zero or negative. If the mounting hub and wheel centerline are attached, then zero offset. The negative and positive offset means the mounting hub is towards or away from the centerline.
