Waist-to-Hip Ratio Definition

The waist-to-Hip is a measurement of your waist circumference to hip circumference. It determines how much fat is stored in your waist and hip area. It also determines the shape of your body i.e either your body  apple shape or pear shape.

If your body is apple-shaped then according to WHO you have much fat in your waist area or mid section. It shows a higher risk of being a patient with hypertension, type-2 diabetes, and other health issues.  According to WHO reports, the standard (ideal) waist-to-hip ratio for men and women is less than 0.90 and 0.70 respectively and the WHR is as follows:

If the men and women both waist to hip ratio is 1.0 or more than 1.0, they have a high risk of being a patient with heart diseases or hypertension, type-2 diabetes, etc.

Waist-to-Hip Ratio Formula

The formula for finding the waist-to-hip ratio is as follows:

[Waist-to-Hip Ratio = The Circumference of the waist (in cm) / The circumference of hip area (in cm)]

In this formula, the circumference of the waist is just above your navel area in cm, and the circumference of the widest part of your hip.

Example:

The waist of Leena is 78 cm and the circumference of Leena's Hip area is 104cm, then find her waist-to-hip ratio in cm, and find the shape of her body?

Solution:

The circumference of Leena’s waist and the widest part of her hip area is given in the question

Then the Leena's : [Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR) = The Circumference of Leena's waist Area / the circumference of Leena's Hip area]

Put the values given in the question,

WHR = 78/ 104

WHR = 0.76

The ratio of Leena’s WHR is 0.76, which is more than the ideal value of WHR for women. This indicates that the physical health of Leena is at lower risk and the shape of Leena's body is pear-shaped.
