Speed Calculator
Speed Calculator with Solution will help you find the average speed of any moving object as per the distance covered in a certain time interval. All you need to do is enter the distance and time as inputs and hit the calculate button. In a matter of seconds, it will display the average speed of an object with a clear-cut explanation.
What is Speed and its Unit?
The definition of speed is the rate of change of position of an object in a particular direction. We can measure speed as the ratio of covered distance to time. It is a scalar quantity with no magnitude and only direction. The units of speed are cm.s^-1 in the CGS system and ms^-1 in the SI system.
Average Speed Formula
The formula to find the speed of an object is expressed as
Speed = Distance / Time
or
s = d/t
Where,
- s is the speed in m/sec
- d is represented as a distance traveled in m
- t is represented as the time taken in s
Types of Speed
The following are the four types of speed. They are as such:
- Variable Speed: When the particular object changes position at equal intervals of time then the object is called a variable speed.
- Average Speed: The ratio of total distance covered by the total time taken by the object is the definition of average speed.
- Uniform Speed: If the object traveled the same distance in the same time interval then the object is said to be in uniform speed.
- Instantaneous Speed: The speed of an object at a certain instance of time is called instantaneous speed.
How to Calculate Speed of an Object without Calculator?
If you are measuring the speed in vehicles, then use the speedometers. Now, let's check the determining process of the speed of a vehicle manually by following the below steps:
- Firstly, you have to take the given parameters from the problems.
- To solve the speed or rate of the object, we need to apply the speed formula ie., speed = distance/time.
- Now, simplify the expression and get the desired output in units of speed.
Let's see the example problem from below and understand the steps even better & improve your subject knowledge.
Solved Example on Calculating Average Speed of a Vehicle
Example:
Calculate the speed of a bus that traveled 100 miles in 3 hours while making 10 stops, each lasting approx 5 minutes.
Solution:
Given data are distance = 100 miles
time travelled = 3 hours
time spent in each stop = 5 minutes
First, find the actual time travelled in the covered distance by subtracting the time spent at the stops;
We get, 5 x 10 = 50 minutes
3 hours minus 50 minutes = 2 hours 50 minutes of travel time
Now, apply the avg speed formula i.e., s = d/t
s = 100 miles / 2 hours 50 minutes
s = 35.29mph
Hence, the speed of a bus is 35.29 miles per hour.
