PPI Calculator is a free online tool that determines the dots per inch, and pixels per inch and provides the display size in inches or centimetres units for the given desktop or smartphone display in a fraction of seconds. All you need to do is simply enter the input data set and get the result along with an elaborated explanation.

What are PPI and DPI?

On a display, the measurement of the total number of pixels to appear on a 1-inch line is called PPI. It is defined as “Pixel per Inch”. Also called pixel density.

On a display, the measurement of the total number of dots printed on a 1-inch line on paper by the printer is called DPI. It is defined as “Dots per Inch”.

PPI vs. DPI

When the topic of screen displays comes up, the term PPI is used. The value of PPI determines the print size of the design & its quality. Color model used in PPI is the RGB (red, green & black). This color model is called an additive color model.

On the contrary, DPI is used in the case of physical prints & not related to anything digital. Color model used in DPI is the CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and key/black). This color model is called a subtractive color model.

How Many Pixels per Inch are Considered as a Normal PPI Value?

Generally, a higher PPI value means a higher quality image. Industry-standard value is 300 PPI. Higher PPI images give you more details in images & more sharpness. While lower PPI gives pixelated & blurry images.

Easy Calculation of PPI (Pixels per Inch) with Steps

  • On a given display check the horizontal pixel display & vertical pixel display
  • Calculate pixel appear on a diagonal by using the formula

dp = √ (w2 + h2)

Here, w = pixel on horizontal edge & h = pixel on vertical edge.

  • Check the screen size diagonally.
  • Calculate PPI using the following formula

PPI = dp / di

Where, di = diagonal screen size.

  • To find the DPI, just take the reciprocal of the PPI value (1 / PPI).

Use onlinecalculator.guide introduced PPI Calculator and get the exact result for any complicated data set within minimum time & study more about the concept by comprehending the elaborated solution prevailed here.

Example for Calculation of Pixels per Inch (PPI) & Dot Pitch (DPI)

If the diagonal screen size is 17 inches. & horizontal pixels are 1078 & vertical pixels are 836. Calculate the DPI

Solution:

We can first use the formula to calculate the pixels on a diagonal length

dp = √ (w2 + h2)

Here, w = 1078 & h= 836

dp = √ (w2 + h2) = √ (1860980)

= 1364.17

Now, we can calculate PPI using formula,

PPI = dp / di = 1364.17/17 = 80.25 PPI

Now, to calculate the DPI, we need to take the reciprocal of PPI.

DPI = 1/ PPI = 1/ 80.25 = 0.0125 inch (0.3167 mm)

FAQ's on PPI Calculator & DPI Calculator

1. What is 1920×1080 in PPI?

On a 24″ screen, it will be 92 PPI and on a 27″ screen, it will be 82 PPI.

2. What is the PPI for 4K?

At 4K, the 32″ screen's PPI is 138 PPI, while the 1080p resolution is 69 PPI.

3. Is 140 PPI good?

A range of 110 to 140 PPI is considered to be a high pixel density range, while at 140 PPI experts found it to be a very high pixel density.

4. Is 157 PPI good?

This screen runs at 3840 × 2160 pixels (157 PPI), sufficient to create a paper-smooth image.
