Body Fat Percentage (BFP) Formula
Here is the formula for calculating the BFP in both imperial & metric units.
Imperial Units:
For Males:
BFP = 86.01 ✕ [log10 (A − N)] − 70.041 ✕ [log10 (H)] + 36.76
For females:
BFP = 163.205 ✕ [log10 (W + C − N)] − 97.684 ✕ [log10 (H)] − 78.387
Here: A is Abdomen [in], C is Hip Circumference [in], H is Height [in], N is Neck [in], and W is Waist [in]
Metric Units:
For Males:
BFP = 495 / (1.0324 − 0.19077 ✕ [log10 (W − N)] + 0.15456 ✕ [log10 (H)]) − 450
For Females:
BFP = 495 / (1.29579 − 0.35004 ✕ [log10 (W + C − N)] + 0.221 ✕ [log10 (H)]) − 450
Here: A is Abdomen [cm], C is hip Circumference [cm], H is Height [cm], N is Neck [cm], and W is Waist [cm]
How to Calculate Body Fat Percentage?
- For calculating body fat, we need only measuring tape.
- Using measuring tape, measure the height, then the circumference of your waist, & lastly the circumference of your neck.
- Once we get these 3 measurements, then we can use the formula according to the imperial or metric units that we use.
- Your body needs a certain level of body fat to function properly. If your body fat percentage is too high or too low, you are unhealthy.

Solved Example of Calculating Body Fat Percentage
Example:
Mathew has a height of 166cm, waist size is 90cm & neck size is 30cm. What is his BFP?
Solution:
Here, let us first write the formula,
BFP = 495 / (1.0324 − 0.19077 ✕ [log10 (W − N)] + 0.15456 ✕ [log10 (H)]) − 450
Here, W = 90cm, N = 30cm & H = 30cm
Now, Body Fat = 27.7%
